Davao Light welcomes 186 pawikan hatchlings in the Cleanergy Park

After more than two months from its discovery, the hatching of another pawikan nest has finally come. Last April 3, Davao Light and Power Co., Inc. together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region XI welcomes 159 pawikan hatchlings at the Cleanergy Park, Sitio Punta Dumalag, Matina Aplaya, Davao City.

A day after, in April 4, 27 additional hatchlings came out from the nest and were immediately released to the sea. This gives a total of 189 hatchlings from one nest, which is so far the largest number of hatchlings released at the Cleanergy Park since 2014.

The pawikan hatchlings, which are believed to be of the Hawksbill species, came from the 2nd batch of pawikan eggs found at the Cleanergy park last January 25, 2017.

Fermin Edillon, Davao Light Community Relations Manager, Engr. Liza Madrazo, Head of Davao City ENRO and Leo Brian Leuterio, Head of City Agri led the releasing of the baby Pawikans.

Atty. Maria Theresa Diongan of the Register of Deeds, Brgy. Matina Aplaya officials, residents from Punta Dumalag and employees from various Aboitiz companies also witnessed the event.

With high hopes, Davao Light wishes that these pawikan hatchlings will grow to the fullness of their potential as they enter their home - the blue waters of the ocean, and that their number will multiply for the next generations to see.” said Edillon.

The 3rd nest found last February 8, 2017 is expected to hatch in a week or two.
