Updates on rotational brownouts PDF Print E-mail
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has increased the load curtailment that it has imposed on Davao Light & Power Co. to a maximum of 72 megawatt (MW) from the 62 it first imposed on the utility last February 8, 2010.

As reported in one of the local dailies, the power cuts to the electric distribution utilities in Mindanao have worsened due to the critical water level in the Lake Lanao and Pulangi River, which are the sources of the water to run the turbines of the major hydro electric plants in Mindanao.

Davao Light has earlier notified the public that it will implement 30-minute rotational outages within its franchise area, which include the cities of
Davao and Panabo and the Municipalities of Carmen, Dujali and Sto. Tomas in Davao del Norte.

According to earlier reports quoting NGCP, several areas in Mindanao are experiencing 6 to 8 hours of power outages.

Davao Light customers, however, are being spared from similar long brownouts because of its standby Bajada Power Plant. This facility is able to operate at a sustained level of 40 MW. It is only when Davao Light's curtailment exceeds 40MW when brownouts have to be resorted to.

Davao Light's Systems Operations Department under Engr. Ledio Peñafiel and the Bajada Power Plant under Engr. Edelito Fernandez, have been working very closely with NGCP to keep the rotational outages at the barest minimum should such curtailment level continue.
