The school children and faculty members of the City Special Education School in Bangkal, Talomo District, Davao City received last Wednesday, December 17, what could be their most cherished Christmas gift ever - a 3-classroom school building complete with armchairs, electric lightings, and blackboard - from Davao Light & Power Co. and the City government of Davao.
Mrs. Ma. Epifania Villa, SPED elementary principal, said the new facility will house the classes of students categorized as “fast learners”. In her acceptance speech she said, that the turnover of the project could not have been more timely as the elementary department is really lacking in classrooms. She said that with the additional classrooms she is confident the students will even perform much better because they will not anymore be holding classes in a congested situation. Art Milan, Senior Vice President of Davao Light in his turnover message, emphasized the partnership between the company and the City Government of Davao under mayor Rodrigo Duterte. He said that it is not coincidental that Davao Light and the city government have parallel focus -- that is, to improve the quality of education in this part of the country. Milan said that while it is acknowledged that education is primarily the concern of the national government both the local governments and the private sector cannot ignore its responsibility in helping attain the ideal quality of education that the people deserve. For her part, Dr. Helen D. Paguican, Davao City Schools Division Superintendent, said she cannot thank Davao Light and the city the more. She said she has been witness to the partnership of the two entities in bringing the quality of public education to a new height. Paguican said she is hoping that more schools will benefit from the generosity of the company and of the city and that those who will pass the portal of the beneficiary schools would one day be the leaders of the city and of the nation. Representing the city during the turnover was lawyer Jeffrey Coronel, a staff of Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta.
