Eight of fifteen wards of the Boys Town in Maa, Davao City who graduated from high school last April 1 will undergo a comprehensive training on carpentry and masonry skills starting next week.

The training will be funded by Davao Light and Power Co. It will be conducted by the Association of Construction and Informal Workers (ACIW), a nationwide organization that is assisting in providing skills to the youth sector that shows interest on carpentry and related work. The association's secretary general is Meynardo P. Palarca, a Davaoeno and former employee and union president of Davao Light. It is an accredited competency assessment center for masonry by the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA). To ensure that the objective of the skills program is carried out Davao Light signed a Memorandum of Agreement with ACIW last Monday, April 20 at the company's C. Bangoy Administration office. The MOA details the duties and responsibilities of the sponsor company and the training institution. The agreement also spelled out the stages of the training through the various modules that will be followed. It also defines the units of competency to be acquired by the trainees. The training consists of theory and on-the-job work component. After completion of both, the trainees will take TESDA's competency assessment or trade test. If the trainees pass the assessment they will be issued a certification as a skilled worker on carpentry and masonry on the entry level category. Signing for Davao Light was Executive Vice President Manuel M. Orig, while the signatory for ACIW was Raul M. Arrocena Sr., Vice President for Mindanao. Witnesses to the occasion included Fr. John Cardinal, SDB, Boys Town Executive Director; the eight beneficiaries of the training program; and Edward Salas, assistant to the ACIW Vice President.  The skills development project is part of Davao Light's corporate social responsibility (CSR) program implementation of which is overseen by the company's Community Relations Department.
