Davao Light sets up new 69 kV line to improve reliability in the southern part of Davao City

A new 69 kV sub-transmission line was recently built and completed by Davao Light and Power Co., Inc. (Davao Light) to improve power quality and reliability in the southern areas of Davao City specifically, in Maa, Ecoland, Matina, Bangkal, and Ulas.

Sub-transmission lines are power lines that transmit power from the grid to the distribution substations. With voltages ranging from 69 kV to 138 kV, these facilities distribute substantial amounts of power to different areas across the franchise.

Davao Light's newest 69 kV sub-transmission line was installed from New Valencia, Tugbok to Davao Light Maa Substation, passing through Magtuod. This line will improve the voltage level and add more capacity in the city's south sector, especially since this part of the city has a growing demand for power. Moreover, it will improve reliability by interconnecting the power supply of the city-south substation cluster to minimize the number of affected customers whenever power interruptions are experienced in the area.

The completion of this project intensifies the commitment of Davao Light to deliver safe and reliable electric service to its customers. With the new sub-transmission line, additional capacity will be delivered and the existing 69 kV line serving the area will be relieved of loading constraints. This will result in reduced voltage loss along the line and sufficient power flow to meet existing electric system demand during planned and unplanned outages.

Despite some challenges and the ongoing pandemic, the project was successfully energized in the third quarter of this year.

We plan to modify some of our poles to install "typhoon-proofing" units to make it more robust and dependable,“ said Davao Light Network Planning and Design Department Head Engr. Chad Ramos.

It is also expected that there will be new line developments in the future to achieve more resilient grids.

In the pursuit of becoming a world-class electric distribution utility, Davao Light, an AboitizPower subsidiary, will continue innovating and upgrading its lines and distribution systems to provide efficient and more reliable power in Davao City and the whole of its franchise area.
